Welcome to the Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk), a historic former collegiate church situated in the centre of Kortrijk, Belgium. Established in 1199 by Baldwin IX, Count of Flanders, and his wife Mary of Champagne, this site played a major historical role in the County of Flanders. When you step inside, you will discover a fascinating blend of art and medieval history.
Look up to see the replica Golden Spurs hanging from the ceiling, which replaced the original 500 spurs placed there after the 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs. As you explore the interior, mostly adorned in late Baroque style, you can admire a Rococo organ crafted by Van Peteghem and notable graves in the choir chapels. Do not miss the chance to view Anthony van Dyck’s famous 1631 altarpiece painting, Raising of the Cross, commissioned by canon Roger Braye.
Through a small door in the south, you can enter the Gothic Count's chapel (Gravenkapel), built in 1370 for Count Louis II of Flanders, which features detailed frescoes depicting the counts and governors of Flanders throughout the Spanish and Austrian eras. Today, this functioning parish church stands alongside the Broeltowers and Artillery tower as a surviving trace of the original medieval castle domain.
