Located in the historic centre of Saint Petersburg, Saint Michael's Castle (also known as Mikhailovsky or Engineers' Castle) offers you a fascinating look into Russian imperial history and architectural grandeur. Built between 1797 and 1801 for Emperor Paul I by architects Vincenzo Brenna and Vasily Bazhenov, this former royal residence was designed as a fortified island citadel surrounded by rivers and canals to protect the paranoid ruler from assassination. Tragically, Paul I was murdered in his bedroom just 40 nights after moving in.

When you visit, you will experience a unique architecture blending French Classicism, Italian Renaissance, Gothic, and Maltese symbolism. Notice how the castle looks different from each side, featuring a square outer structure with rounded corners enclosing a striking octagonal courtyard. On the southern facade, admire statues representing royal virtues like Power and Glory, alongside a colonnade and grand main staircase echoing European baroque style.

Outside, marvel at the bronze equestrian Monument to Peter the Great, cast by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Today, as a branch of the Russian Museum, the castle houses the Portrait Gallery, displaying official portraits of Russian emperors, empresses, and dignitaries from the late 17th to early 20th century.
