Located in central Tbilisi along Rustaveli Avenue directly across from the Parliament building, the Kashveti Church of St. George offers you a fascinating look into Georgian Orthodox heritage and local legend. Built between 1904 and 1910 by architect Leopold Bilfeldt, this striking church draws its design inspiration from the medieval Samtavisi Cathedral. Funded by Georgian nobility and the bourgeoisie, it stands on the historic site of an earlier 1753 brick church requested by the Amilakhvari family.
As you step inside, you can admire intricate ornate design elements contributed by N. Agladze, alongside vibrant frescoes painted in 1947 by the influential Georgian artist Lado Gudiashvili. The site is also the resting place of notable figures such as Ivane Amilakhvari, Grigol Orbeliani, and David Sarajishvili. Beyond its art and architecture, Kashveti holds a unique name derived from the Georgian words for "stone" (kva) and "to give birth" (shva).
According to local legend, a woman falsely accused the 6th-century monk David of Gareja of impregnating her; when his prophecy came true and she gave birth to a stone, the location earned its intriguing name.
