Located in the southwest region of Caracas within the Parish of Caricuao, Parque Zoológico Caricuao offers a distinct look into Venezuela's natural history and zoological efforts. Established by decree in 1974 and officially opened to the public in July 1977, this expansive destination spans a total area of 630 hectares. When you visit, you will find that the vast majority of the land—594 hectares—is dedicated to the protection of local flora, native fauna, and the preservation of the park's vital watershed.
The remaining 36 developed hectares feature a zoological park designed to showcase seven specific natural environments. While exploring the grounds, you can observe the park's unique layout, though it is important to understand its background. Due to national economic challenges starting around 2017, the park experienced budget cuts, leading to staff shortages, animal loss, and reduced security.
Historically housing 700 animals, the population dropped to around 150. Despite these challenging circumstances, the park remains a significant piece of Caracas's urban landscape, giving visitors a direct view of a major Venezuelan conservation site, its surrounding watershed, and its distinct environmental zones in the southwestern part of the city.
