St. Andrew’s Uniting Church, Brisbane 🇦🇺

Located at 131 Creek Street on the corner with Ann Street in the Brisbane CBD, St. Andrew's Uniting Church is a historic heritage-listed sanctuary. Originally built in 1905 as St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church to replace an earlier structure displaced by the expansion of Brisbane Central Railway Station, it became part of the Uniting Church in 1977 following the merger of the Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregational churches.

Designed by architect George David Payne and constructed by Alexander Lind & Son, the church was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. When you visit, you will encounter one of the Southern Hemisphere's finest examples of Neo-Romanesque architecture. The building features a simple, severe exterior of face brick with semicircular arched openings, bold geometric shapes, and sparse Celtic and Norman ornamentation. Inside, the spacious auditorium offers an unobstructed view unbroken by pillars.

Key elements to see include the half-domed concrete ceiling over the chancel, stained-glass windows in the narthex crafted by F.W. Ashwin and Co. depicting John Knox, John Calvin, and the Burning Bush, and a remarkable organ housed in a silky oak case designed by Payne.
