Auckland Zoo is a 16.35-hectare (40-acre) not-for-profit wildlife conservation organisation located in Auckland, New Zealand. Situated right next to Te Waiōrea Western Springs Park and not far from Auckland’s central business district, this lush and immersive zoo focuses on the wellbeing of people, wildlife, and nature. Originally opened in 1922, the zoo has evolved from its early days into a modern conservation leader certified net carbonzero and Qualmark accredited EnviroGold.
When you visit, you can explore five separate tracks loosely organized by species origin, taxonomy, or biome. Make sure to check out Te Wao Nui, the zoo's largest development opened in 2011, which showcases a host of native New Zealand flora and fauna. You will also find the New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine (NZCCM), the zoo's veterinary hospital where sick and injured native wildlife from around New Zealand are treated for rehabilitation and release.
Beyond visitor displays, zoo staff actively participate in conservation fieldwork across New Zealand, French Polynesia, and the Pacific Islands. Combining rich history—including historical landmarks like Jamuna Plaza—with dedicated animal welfare, Auckland Zoo offers an engaging educational experience.
