The Salzburg Museum, dedicated to the artistic and cultural history of the city and region of Salzburg, Austria, traces its roots back to 1834 when it began as a small collection of Napoleonic War military memorabilia. Originally known as the Provincialmuseum and later the Museum Carolino-Augusteum, it evolved into the official town museum following the Revolution of 1848.

Relocated to the historic Neue Residenz in 2005, this institution—honored with the European Museum of the Year Award in 2009—showcases impressive historical treasures. Notable collection items include the 1st-century Celtic marble Hohensalzburg head, furniture from Anif Palace, the earliest known example of a bass clarinet, the original manuscript of the Missa Salisburgensis à 53 voci, and the circa 1820 Mohr arrangement of Silent Night.

Please note that the museum's main location at the Neue Residenz is currently closed for major renovations and expansion until 2026, when it will reopen alongside the new Belvedere Salzburg museum. While the main venue is undergoing transformation, you can catch guest performances and exhibitions hosted across various Salzburg institutions through 2026, or look forward to the 2025 opening of the Sattler Panorama at the historic Orangery of Mirabell Palace.
