Shaare Shalom Synagogue 🇯🇲

Located in Kingston, Jamaica, the Sha'are Shalom Synagogue (officially Kahal Kadosh Sha'are Shalom or the United Congregation of Israelites) offers a unique historical experience. Reconstructed by the Henriques Brothers in 1912 after the original 1885 building was destroyed by an earthquake, this surviving structure represents a unified history formed by merged Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities. Today, it operates as a Reform Jewish sanctuary incorporating both English and Hebrew prayers.

Inside the sanctuary, which can seat over 600 people, you will see a floor covered in sand—a Sephardi tradition designed to remind visitors of times when sand was used to muffle prayer sounds during the Spanish Inquisition. The sanctuary also houses a 52-stop pipe organ. Next to the main building, you can explore an adjacent museum of Jamaican Jewish history.

Featuring historical Judaica gathered from across Jamaica, it is recognized as one of the Caribbean's finest historical collections. Over the years, this historic location has hosted significant events, including a 2002 visit by Louis Farrakhan and a 2012 Rastafarian Nyabinghi concert.
