Welcome to the National Palace of Culture (Palacio de la Cultura), one of the oldest and most resilient buildings standing in Managua, Nicaragua. Commissioned in 1935 by President Juan Bautista Sacasa and designed by architect Pablo Dambach, this historic landmark notably survived the devastating 1972 earthquake. For over fifty years, it served as the home of the National Congress of Nicaragua, making it a central stage for pivotal historical events.
Most famously, Sandinista rebels led by Eden Pastora seized the building during a congress session in August 1978, taking two thousand hostages to further their cause. Today, you can explore the palace as a thriving cultural hub. It houses the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture, the National Archive, and the National Library alongside a fascinating art gallery featuring works by renowned artists such as Arnold Belkin, Armando Morales, and Leoncio Saénz.
