When you visit Managua, Nicaragua, make sure to take in the striking Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Widely known as the New Cathedral (La Nueva Catedral), this unique house of worship was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary to replace the original St. James' Cathedral, which suffered severe damage during a devastating 1972 earthquake that destroyed 90% of the city.

Designed by renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, construction began around August 1991, leading to its formal inauguration on September 4, 1993. As you explore the structure, you will notice its most distinctive feature: a plethora of dramatic cupolas crowning the roof. This unusual silhouette generated architectural controversy and earned the landmark its famous local nickname, La Chichona.

Financed in part through contributions from American businessman Tom Monaghan, the owner of Domino's Pizza, the $4.5 million cathedral offers a fascinating glimpse into Managua's modern history and post-earthquake renewal. Inside, you can reflect on the building's eventful past, including a July 2020 incident where a Molotov cocktail fire damaged the cathedral's image of Sangre de Cristo y el Santísimo. It stands as a compelling, highly debated landmark you should not miss.
