Founded in 1731 by Spanish Franciscan Catholics on the eastern banks of the San Antonio River, Mission San Juan Capistrano offers you a quiet look into Texas history as part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Named for Saint John of Capestrano, this historic settlement features an authentic layout where you can explore the mission's original square framed by courtyard walls.
During your visit, you will see a long granary built around 1756 featuring an attractive belfry, reconstructed priests' quarters, restored stone native quarters, and the foundations of an unfinished church begun around 1760. You can also view the mission church, which underwent a major stabilization project in 2012 that restored its exterior with eggshell white lime plaster.
While exploring the grounds, you will gain an honest sense of mission life, from the early brush-and-mud chapels and historic acequia irrigation systems to the shifting soil challenges that required deep pier-and-beam foundation work. Today, the Archdiocese of San Antonio maintains the church building, rectory, and parish hall, allowing you to appreciate both active religious life and rich preserved Texas heritage.
