When you visit Yekaterinburg, the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land offers a profound historical experience. Built on the tragic site of the former Ipatiev House, this Russian Orthodox complex commemorates Romanov sainthood and honors the memory of Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, their five children, and household members who were held prisoner for 78 days and murdered by the Bolsheviks in July 1918. The original mansion was demolished under Soviet orders in 1977, but construction of this dedicated memorial complex began in 2000 following the canonization of the imperial family as Passion Bearers.
Spanning 2,760 square metres, the completed site features two distinct churches, a belfry, a patriarchal annex, and a specialized museum dedicated to the imperial family. As you explore the grounds, you can see the main church altar, which sits directly over the basement site of the Romanov execution. Outside, you will discover a special Orthodox cross marking the exact location of that fateful basement room.
If you visit on Christmas Day (January 7), you can also admire intricate ice artwork during the annual international ice sculpture festival "Bethlehem Star," hosted right at the church.
