Welcome to Parque Nacional Simón Bolívar, an urban park spanning approximately 14 hectares in downtown San José's Barrio Amón neighborhood. As Costa Rica's oldest zoo and botanical garden, this historic site offers a unique look into local fauna and conservation history. Named in honor of Latin American national founder Simón Bolívar, the park is managed by the non-profit conservation group Fundazoo.
Every animal housed here has been orphaned, injured, or disabled, receiving care with the goal of being nursed back to health for release into the wild. As you explore, you will encounter a wide variety of wildlife. Spot fascinating mammals such as Brutus the jaguar, Central American tapirs, Hoffmann's two-toed sloths, spider monkeys, capuchins, and kinkajous.
Bird enthusiasts can admire vibrant Scarlet Macaws, toucans, owls, and parrots, while reptile and amphibian habitats showcase American crocodiles, caimans, strawberry poison frogs, and native vipers. Visitors should note that since 2013, activists have sought legal avenues to relocate the animals to cage-free rescue centers. A walk through these grounds connects you directly to Costa Rica’s ongoing wildlife preservation story right in the capital.
