The Lutheran Church of the Holy Catherine

Step into 18th-century Siberian history at The Lutheran Church of the Holy Catherine in Omsk, Russia. Built between 1790 and 1792 for foreign Protestants working in the Siberian corps governance and Omsk fortress, this unique structure stands as an exceptional architectural monument of the late Siberian Baroque style. Located near the Irtysh River on the east side of the fortress's square parade ground, the rectangular building boasts a large semi-circular altar, smooth walls adorned with pilasters, an anfractuous cornice, and semicircular windows decorated with architraves.

Its main facade features a centrally symmetric composition with a central risalit pierced by three arched windows, flanked by rounded corners and additional arched openings. While the original interior has not been preserved, you can admire the movement of its architectural forms, flexibility, and rich stucco work that make it one of Omsk's finest historic landmarks. Over time, the building's exterior evolved—including a former Gothic tower added in 1906–1908 to give it a more traditional 'German' appearance—reflecting its deep ties to its community.

Prominent past parishioners include Governor-General Gustav Hristianovich Gasford, a hero of the War of 1812, alongside eminent architects Frederick Fridrihovich Wagner and Edward I. Ezet.
