First Congregational Church of Albany 🇺🇸

Located on Quail Street in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Albany, New York, the First Congregational Church of Albany—also known as The Ray Palmer Memorial—is a historic brick sanctuary steeped in regional heritage. Built in the 1910s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it holds the distinction of being the city's first Colonial Revival church. As you approach the exterior, you can admire its imposing entrance portico supported by four fluted Ionic columns, brickwork designed to simulate corner quoins, and an elegant multi-stage steeple capped by a copper bell-shaped cupola.

On the north side, observe the early 1960s Sunday school addition, built in an architecturally sympathetic modernist style. Stepping inside through the classical narthex, visitors find a sanctuary featuring two main aisles, wooden pews, fluted composite wall pilasters, and decorative organ pipe racks flanking the chancel. A highlight of the interior design is the chancel's elliptical arched molding framing a stained-glass bullseye window depicting Christ in Gethsemane.

Balancing this is the building's south facade, which features additional stained glass alongside dramatic 24-light round-arched windows.
