Standing proudly atop a central mound in Gaziantep, Turkey, Gaziantep Castle offers you a remarkable journey through centuries of ancient history. First established as a Hittite observation point, this historic hilltop was later expanded into a grand stone fortress by the Roman Empire during the second and third centuries. It underwent further renovations under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, eventually acquiring its distinctive round shape with a 1,200-meter circumference and 12 bastions.
Over time, the fortress saw additional modifications by the Ayyubids and the Ottoman Empire, playing a vital defense role during the Turkish War of Independence. Inside, you can explore the Gaziantep Defence and Heroism Panoramic Museum and watch a periodic documentary detailing the city’s historic defense against French forces. Though severely damaged by consecutive earthquakes in February 2023—which collapsed sections of its eastern and southern bastions—the castle has been undergoing extensive restoration by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism since September 2023.
