Zeugma Mosaic Museum 🇹🇷

Located in Gaziantep, Turkey, the Zeugma Mosaic Museum stands as the world's largest mosaic museum, boasting 1,700 m2 of mosaics within a massive 30,000 m2 facility. Opened to the public on September 9, 2011, it took the title of the world's largest mosaic museum from Tunis's Bardo National Museum. When you visit, you will explore a world-class collection of Hellenistic Greek and Roman mosaics centered on the ancient city of Zeugma.

Legend holds that Seleucus I Nicator, a military officer who served under Alexander the Great and founded the Seleucid Kingdom, established Zeugma as Seleucia. These extraordinary historic treasures stayed largely unknown until 2000, when artifacts surfaced in museums and proposed Euphrates River dams threatened to flood much of the ancient site. Today, research teams actively continue work on the project, with many mosaics remaining covered.

Remarkable for its resilience, the museum building and its prized artifacts survived the devastating Mw 7.8 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake completely unscathed, while all museum staff members also survived. The museum swiftly reopened to visitors in April 2023, just two and a half months after the earthquake. Step inside to witness this incredible triumph of ancient art and modern preservation.
