Located at 2100 Highland Avenue South in Birmingham, Alabama, Temple Emanu-El is a vibrant Reform Jewish congregation and synagogue whose Hebrew name translates to "God is with us." As a visitor, you will appreciate its rich history, which dates back to 1881 when the founding community first gathered for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services under the leadership of lay leader, businessman, poet, and humanitarian Samuel Ullman. Before building their own place of worship, the community met at the local Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The congregation originally constructed a synagogue in 1889 featuring a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Moorish revival styles complete with a corner tower and bulbous cupolas.
Today, you can visit their current home, established in 1912 and designed by architect William C. Weston in the striking Neoclassical style. Following an extensive $17 million renovation and expansion in 2004, the sanctuary was thoughtfully updated and restored alongside rebuilt facilities for congregational and community events.
Throughout its past, Temple Emanu-El has been guided by notable spiritual leaders, including Rabbi Morris Newfield, who served for 45 years, and Rabbi Milton Grafman, a signer of "A Call for Unity." It remains an active community hub serving over 600 member families.
