Step into history at La Fortaleza, also known as the Palacio de Santa Catalina, located in the historic quarter of Old San Juan. Built as a medieval stone fortress between 1533 and 1540 by order of King Charles I of Spain, it was the first Spanish fortification erected on San Juan Islet to protect San Juan Bay. Having housed governors since 1544, it holds the distinction of being the oldest executive seat in continuous use in the New World.

Remodeled in 1846 to its present Neoclassical style, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a captivating mix of military origin and administrative grandeur. When visiting, you will see a unique architectural complex featuring white, light blue, and light gray exterior paint overlooking high city walls. The complex includes the historical Homage Tower—where governors once took oaths of fidelity—and the later-built Austral Tower.

You can also view integrated historical elements like the Santa Catalina Alejandría chapel, spacious living quarters on the upper floors, and sheltered gardens with a swimming pool tucked inside the north perimeter. It stands as an enduring emblem of Puerto Rico's dramatic colonial past.
