Welcome to Plaza de la Catedral, also known as Plazuela de las Monjas ("little square of the nuns"), a charming public space set in the heart of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. As you step into this historic area, you are visiting what is possibly the oldest square in the city, with roots tracing all the way back to the founding of the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in 1521. Directly in front of you sits the magnificent cathedral itself, while right next door you will spot the former Carmelite convent, which today operates as Hotel El Convento.

Located at the end of a wide historical residential block, the square is framed by Calle del Cristo to the east and bordered by two historic alleyways: Caleta de Las Monjas to the north and Caleta de San Juan to the south. Following Caleta de San Juan leads you directly to the famous San Juan Gate (Puerta de San Juan), once known as the Water Gate, which served as the primary harbor entrance into the historic walled city. Over the centuries, this surrounding block has also housed the city's first Episcopal church and the former San Juan Children's Museum.

It offers a wonderful glimpse into San Juan's rich heritage.
