You will find Plaza del Quinto Centenario, locally known as Plaza del Tótem, situated in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, between the Ballajá and Mercado neighborhoods. Inaugurated in 1992 to mark the 500th anniversary of European arrival and Spanish conquest in the Americas, this modern square sits on land once home to a 16th-century Dominican monastery, 19th-century Spanish Army barracks, and 20th-century Fort Brooke. As you walk through the plaza, you will see its main feature: the 40-foot Tótem Telúrico sculpture created by Puerto Rican ceramist Jaime Suárez. Built from black granite and ceramic fragments, it reflects native Taíno pottery and the initial meeting of indigenous people and European colonizers. Take time to notice the wind rose at the totem's base, needle-shaped columns pointing to the North Star at the south end, and sculptures representing the Agnus Dei.

The square’s multi-level steps symbolize the five centuries since 1492, offering a unique venue that hosts events like the annual San Sebastián Street Festival in January.
