Recognized as an Architectural Heritage site of Cali, the cathedral was officially declared a National Monument of Colombia on March 12, 1982.

Construction initially began in the Baroque style under the design of architect Antonio García, with parish priest José Rivera laying the first stone on September 1, 1772. Local prison inmates provided the labor to build the historic walls. Although most of the building was finished by 1802, political problems delayed the completion of the tower.
