Located in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mount Zion Baptist Church stands as a deeply moving symbol of perseverance and community strength. First organized in 1909 as a small study group, the church's original permanent sanctuary opened in April 1921 after years of dedicated fundraising, partially aided by an unsecured loan from a local Jewish contractor. Tragically, just weeks later, the building was destroyed during the Tulsa race massacre on June 1, 1921, when a mob burned the structure. Despite the total loss of their building, financial collapse, and severe bankruptcy, the resilient congregation refused to lose faith or abandon their moral obligations, ultimately working for decades to repay their original debts in full.
When you visit today, you will encounter the rebuilt sanctuary, which was designed by congregation members and architect brothers W. S. and J. C. Latimer before being dedicated in 1952 on its original site.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, the site honors the extraordinary tenacity of Greenwood's Black community. It is an essential stop for travelers seeking an honest, profound look at Tulsa's history, community resilience, and architectural heritage.
