Located in Chowk Bazaar within the old court area of Surat, Heritage Square offers you an immersive journey through centuries of rich history. As you explore this fascinating district, currently managed by the Surat Municipal Corporation following a redevelopment initiative launched in 2013, you will discover striking architecture crafted by both the Mughals and the British. The square features seven primary historic attractions to admire during your visit. You can see the 16th-century Surat Castle, also known as the old fort, built by Khudawand Khan.
Directly in front of the castle stands the J.J. Training College, established in 1827 as an English school funded by Seth Sorabji Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy before transitioning into a teachers' college in 1939. Book lovers can marvel at the 175-year-old Andrews Library, while history enthusiasts can view the British-era Old Museum building. For religious heritage, visit CNI Christ Church, Surat's oldest church, built in 1824 featuring a ten-foot cross and a 300-year-old bible.
Take a relaxing walk through the nearby historic gardens, including Kasturba Garden and Victoria Garden, now called Gandhi Buag. You can also explore nearby sights like Mughal Sarai, Shaniwari Bazaar, and the Heritage walkway.
