When you visit Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, Harkness Tower stands as a striking 216-foot Collegiate Gothic landmark. Designed by James Gamble Rogers and completed in 1922 as part of the Memorial Quadrangle, this masonry tower rises from a square base to an octagonal double stone crown topped with finials. As you admire its facade, look closely at the elaborate sculptures crafted by Lee Lawrie.

You will see carvings depicting Yale's Eight Worthies—including Elihu Yale, Nathan Hale, and Noah Webster—alongside classical figures, allegorical statues, and upper-level gargoyles portraying students at war and study. Inside, the tower ascends 284 steps from street level to roof, housing four openwork copper clockfaces midway up. Behind these clockfaces sits the 54-bell Yale Memorial Carillon, played by the student-run Yale Guild of Carillonneurs.

The tower also contains a memorial chapel, practice carillons, and office space. Inspired by historic English and Welsh towers, Harkness Tower offers you a rich blend of architectural history, intricate stone craftsmanship, and vibrant campus tradition right in the heart of Yale's Branford College.
