If you are exploring New Haven, Connecticut, make sure to visit Christ Church, a notable Episcopal parish located at 70 Broadway near downtown and nearby Yale University. Completed in 1898 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, this landmark church offers visitors a stunning display of Gothic Revival architecture designed by Henry Vaughan. Originally an offshoot of New Haven's Trinity Church, Christ Church practices an Anglo-Catholic tradition focused on urban ministry and beautiful liturgy. When you step inside, you will admire an exceptional collection of art personally chosen by Vaughan.
Look for the intricate wood carving executed by Bavarian-born Johannes Kirchmayer, which is particularly striking on the rood screen. You will also see masterfully crafted stained glass windows by C.E. Kempe of London, including a large window placed above the baptismal font at the back of the sanctuary. At the high altar, marvel at the monumental stone figures and the carved Caen stone reredos inspired by Winchester Cathedral and St.
Alban's in England. Outside, the stone tower is modeled on Magdalen College, Oxford. For an uplifting visit, drop in for fine choral music during Sunday's 11:00am Solemn High Mass, or join the evening Compline at 9:00pm from September through May.
