If you are exploring Jamaica Hills in Queens, New York, visit Captain George H. Tilly Park for a pleasant outdoor escape. This 9.16-acre park offers a peaceful neighborhood retreat north of downtown Jamaica, bordered by 165th Street, 85th Avenue, Chapin Parkway, Gothic Drive, and Highland Avenue.

Operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the park is steeped in local history, having been donated by the Tilly family in 1908 and named in honor of Spanish-American War hero Captain George H. Tilly. When you visit, you will discover Goose Pond, a 2-acre lake serving as the park's central highlight.

It stands as the only remaining kettle pond in Jamaica Hills, created by receding glaciers during the Wisconsin glaciation. As you stroll along the paved paths, look out for the pond's bird sanctuary—known as the smallest island in the smallest natural body of water in NYC—and its seven artificial water jets. You can also view the 1941 Spanish-American War heroes' monument, enjoy the updated benches and landscaping, bring kids to the playground on the park's northeastern side, or utilize the restrooms located in the southeast section.
