You will find the magnificent Lecce Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, sitting on the southeast corner of Piazza del Duomo in the center of Lecce, Italy. First built in 1144 and dramatically rebuilt in 1659 by architect Giuseppe Zimbalo, this seat of the Archbishop of Lecce is a must-visit masterpiece of Baroque art. As you approach from the piazza, you can admire the northern façade's grand portal, cascading staircase, and statues of Saint Giusto, Saint Fortunato, and patron Saint Orontius.

Inside, step under an intricate 1685 coffered wooden ceiling featuring striking paintings by Giuseppe da Brindisi across three naves. Explore twelve detailed side chapels showcasing historic artwork, a marble and gold-plated bronze main altar consecrated in 1757, and carved walnut choir stalls. Descend into the 12th-century crypt to see its corridor of ninety-two columns topped with capitals decorated with human figures and two Baroque chapels.

Do not miss the adjacent 72-meter bell tower, rebuilt in 1661 with five tapered levels and an octagonal majolica dome. Take the panoramic lift up to enjoy views sweeping across to the Adriatic Sea and even the distant mountains of Albania on exceptionally clear days.
