When you visit Lecce, Italy, the Castle of Charles V (also known as Castello Carlo Quinto or Castello di Lecce) stands as a captivating destination blending military history and rich culture. Originally constructed in the Middle Ages, this historic fortress was extensively reinforced in 1539 by order of Charles V and redesigned by military architect Gian Giacomo dell'Acaya. To build it, two older structures—the Chapel of the Trinity and the Monastery of the Benedictine Order of the Holy Cross—were demolished.

Over the centuries, the castle has evolved beyond defense. During the 18th century, one of its halls even operated as a theatre, and it later served as a military district from 1870 to 1979. Today, it houses the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Municipality of Lecce and hosts numerous cultural events.

As you step inside, you will discover remarkably elegant interior decorations. Be sure to look for the carved capitals, massive stone columns supporting the upper floors, and a grand hall adorned with large stained-glass windows. You will also learn intriguing local folklore, such as the 14th-century legend of the Orsini del Balzo family keeping a white bear in the moat to show off their status and deter unwanted intruders.
