Perched on an independent hill roughly 24 meters above sea level in the Niikura neighborhood of Wakō, Saitama, the Gobōyama Site offers you an intriguing glimpse into ancient Japanese history. Situated on the northeastern edge of the Musashino Terrace overlooking the Arakawa River, this National Historic Site preserves the remains of a significant middle to late Yayoi period settlement. What makes a visit here so remarkable is its large-scale fortified design—multi-ring moated settlements are quite uncommon in eastern Japan.
As you explore the 18,600-square-meter area, you will learn about an ancient community shaped by defensive needs and cross-regional trade. Archaeologists have uncovered 152 pit dwellings, a double-moated defensive system (Moats A and B) alongside a third western moat, and five square burial mounds set intentionally apart from the living quarters. The site has yielded fascinating artifacts linking it to central Japan, including pottery traditions from southern Kantō, the Chūbu highlands, and the eastern Tōkai region.
Look out for details on unique finds like a copper sword and dōtaku-shaped earthenware ritual objects, as well as local folklore connecting the hill to an exiled prince from the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla.
