If you are traveling to Gianyar Regency in Bali, Indonesia, you will find the Bali Zoo, which holds the distinction of being the island’s very first and primary zoo. Founded in 2002 by Anak Agung Gde Putra and later managed by his son Lesmana Putra starting in 2011, this popular destination attracts hundreds of thousands of guests, including notable figures like Indonesia’s seventh president, Joko Widodo, who visited with his family in April 2025. When you visit, you can explore a facility that houses over 600 animals spanning 60 different species.

While it remains a major attraction drawing 800 to 1,000 visitors on average weekdays and up to 2,000 people on peak holidays like Isra Mikraj and Chinese New Year, travelers should remain fully informed before planning a trip. Animal welfare organizations like World Animal Protection raised concerns in 2018 and 2023 regarding abusive practices at the site, including elephant riding and visitor touching. Tragically, in December 2024, a 45-year-old female Sumatran elephant named Molly died at the zoo after being swept away by a strong river current.

Keep these serious considerations in mind as you evaluate whether to add Bali's flagship zoo to your official island travel itinerary.
