Perched on a massive rock along a dramatic hairpin bend of the Ohře river, Loket Castle is one of the oldest stone strongholds in the Czech Republic. Originally built in the 12th century, this Gothic fortress earned the nickname "the Impregnable Castle of Bohemia" for its formidable thick walls. Once a royal retreat, administrative center, and even a tough town prison where a young Charles IV was briefly held in a cellar cell, the complex today functions as a vibrant museum and national monument.
When you visit, you can explore nine distinct castle sections packed with medieval history. Climb the Romanesque polygonal tower, see the tiny 12th-century rotunda—the smallest of its kind in the nation—and wander through the Margrave's House, which displays locally made porcelain and historical tombstones. You will also uncover uncovered Romanesque ramparts in the archaeological hall, see a replica of the famous Elbogen meteorite, and venture down into the former prison cells and torture chamber.
Movie fans might even recognize the castle and surrounding town center from their starring role in the 2006 film *Casino Royale*.
