Located within the Eidgah Shah-i-Hamadan complex in Srinagar, Aali Mosque is a historic congregational mosque regarded as the second-largest in the city and one of the largest in the Kashmir Valley. When you visit, you will encounter one of the finest surviving examples of Kashmiri wooden vernacular architecture, showcasing a rich synthesis of indigenous traditions alongside Central Asian and Iranian influences.
Built on a modular grid plan, the impressive main prayer hall is supported by roughly 151 deodar wooden columns measuring about 16 feet high, each resting on carved stone pedestals. As you explore the interior, you can admire historical craftsmanship including pinjrakari (wooden latticework), intricate woodwork, and a six-stepped pulpit carved from Devri stone.
Originally associated with the Shah Mir dynasty of the Kashmir Sultanate, with origins dating to 1395 CE or 1471 CE, the mosque has evolved through repairs during the Mughal and Afghan eras to recent 2020s government conservation projects. Today, its structure displays a unique blend of architectural elements from multiple historical periods across its expansive 19,850-square-foot footprint.
