Boyd Hill Nature Preserve 🇺🇸

Nestled on the shores of Lake Maggiore in south St. Petersburg, Florida, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is a 245-acre protected area operated by the city's Parks and Recreation department. If you love exploring diverse environments, this destination offers over three miles of trails weaving through a variety of natural communities.

You can wander past lakes, freshwater marshes, and swamps, or explore upland landscapes featuring pine flatwoods, scrub, and hardwood hammocks. The plant life is wonderfully rich, ranging from giant leather ferns, red maples, and bald cypress in the wetlands to saw palmetto, live oaks, and three types of pine—sand, longleaf, and slash—in the uplands. Keep an eye out for wildlife and migratory birds that rely on Lake Maggiore for food.

Beyond the lush flora, you will discover unique artwork scattered across the property. The preserve features seven metal sculptures made from recycled scrap by the late local artist Paul Eppling, including two large armadillos near Wax Myrtle Pond, a heron near Lake Maggiore Island, and figures placed around the parking lot and environmental center. The site also includes a playground, picnic areas, and an aviary where injured raptors are cared for.
