When you visit northern Chile, take time to explore the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, also known as Iquique Cathedral. Located in Iquique, this historic Catholic church serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Iquique. Consecrated in 1882 under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the church has a deeply fascinating past rooted in local resilience. Construction began following a fundraising campaign led by Apostolic Vicar Camilo Ortuzar after a fire tragically destroyed Iquique’s original parish church on May 10, 1833.
The building's construction was fully completed in 1885. As you walk through this remarkable sacred space, you are stepping into a site woven into Chilean military and regional history. In May 1884, the cathedral temporarily housed the remains of hero Arturo Prat and others who fell during the famous naval Battle of Iquique, keeping them safe before they were moved to Valparaiso in 1888. Later, in 1929, the church was elevated to cathedral status upon the creation of the Diocese of Iquique.
Finally, in 1989, the cathedral and its attached parochial houses earned official recognition as an official historical monument (Monumento histórico). It stands as a moving stop for anyone interested in Chilean history and heritage.
