Church of St. Lucia

Located in the historic El Empedrao neighborhood of Maracaibo, Venezuela, the Church of St. Lucia (Iglesia de Santa Lucía) stands as a monumental landmark. Built between 1867 and 1876 under the orders of General Venancio Pulgar, this parish church holds a special place in local heritage as the only 19th-century Gothic Revival church erected in the city.

When you step inside, you will immediately notice the soaring Gothic Revival arcades that lend the nave its striking vertical character. Dedicated to Saint Lucy of Syracuse—the patroness of sight and the throat—the church is the seat of Maracaibo's second most popular religious devotion. Its rich history began as early as 1834, when local parishioners gathered in private homes to plan a space of worship after nearby creeks isolated them from the main cathedral.

Today, you can admire its beautifully preserved architecture, fully restored in the 20th century through generous community donations. Beyond its principal image of Saint Lucy, acquired in 1890, the temple hosts deep-rooted devotions to Our Lady of the Nativity and Saint Benedict the Moor.
