Lisbon Oceanarium 🇵🇹

The Lisbon Oceanarium, known in Portuguese as the Oceanário de Lisboa, is a major indoor marine exhibit situated in Lisbon, Portugal. It stands within the Parque das Nações, a waterfront district originally built as the grounds for the Expo '98 exposition. Positioned on a pier set inside an artificial lagoon, the structure's design was led by architect Peter Chermayeff and is recognized for its architectural resemblance to an aircraft carrier. Welcoming roughly one million visitors annually, it ranks among the largest indoor aquarium facilities in Europe.

Across its exhibits, the facility houses approximately 16,000 individual specimens representing around 450 species of marine and terrestrial life, ranging from birds and mammals to fish, invertebrates, amphibians, and plants. The oceanarium's core feature is a massive central tank holding five million liters of water across a surface area of 1,000 square meters. Measuring seven meters deep, the tank allows pelagic species to swim freely above bottom-dwelling creatures, simulating an open-ocean environment. Guests can view roughly 100 species within this central habitat—including groupers, barracudas, rays, moray eels, and sharks—through four primary acrylic windows and several smaller observation points.

Encircling the main central tank are four distinct environmental exhibits that recreate specific global coastlines: the rocky shore of the North Atlantic, the Antarctic coast, the temperate kelp forests of the Pacific Ocean, and the tropical coral reef system of the Indian Ocean. Transparent acrylic dividers separate these habitats from the central basin, preserving the visual continuity of a single ocean. Additionally, the first level contains 25 thematic aquariums focusing on the unique features of various aquatic ecosystems.

Among the facility's specialized residents is the ocean sunfish, an animal seldom kept in captivity due to its complex care requirements. Other notable residents include large spider crabs and two female sea otters, Micas and Maré, who were brought to Lisbon from a zoo in Rotterdam. The oceanarium also features a tropical freshwater display titled "Forests Underwater," created by Takashi Amano in 2015. Containing 160,000 liters of water and stretching 40 meters in length, this lushly planted installation is considered the largest nature aquarium in the world.
