The Tetsugaku-no-michi follows a cherry-lined canal for 2 km between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji, named for a philosopher who walked it to meditate.

What to see at Philosopher’s Path

  • Cherry-blossom tunnel in early April.
  • Detour to quiet temples: Hōnen-in, Eikan-dō.
  • Cafés and craft shops along the way.
  • Ends at grand Nanzen-ji and its brick aqueduct.

Visiting tips

Walk it north-to-south from Ginkaku-ji, ending at Nanzen-ji — then you’re set for Gion in the evening.
