The Royal Mile 🇬🇧

The Royal Mile forms the primary thoroughfare of the Old Town in Edinburgh, Scotland. Spanning almost precisely one mile, this central street connects two prominent historic locations: Edinburgh Castle at its western peak and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at its eastern end. The route sits atop a glacial ridge formed as a crag and tail, sloping gently downhill from an elevation of 109 meters to 42 meters above sea level. A network of steep alleyways, historically known as closes, branches off from the main street between tall tenement buildings.

At the top of the route, the Castle Esplanade serves as an 18th-century parade ground that hosts the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Moving east into Castlehill, notable sites include Cannonball House, the Outlook Tower and Camera Obscura, the Scotch Whisky Experience, and the Hub, which houses the headquarters of the Edinburgh International Festival. The adjacent Lawnmarket, historically designated as an open-air market for textiles and linens, features preserved historic architecture such as the 16th-century Riddle's Court and Gladstone's Land, a 17th-century merchant townhouse.

Further downhill, the High Street forms the busiest segment of the Royal Mile, lined with shops, eateries, and public houses. During the annual Edinburgh Fringe, this section becomes a popular venue for street performers and crowds. Parliament Square sits along this stretch, housing St Giles' Cathedral alongside the High Court of Justiciary and the Court of Session. Nearby landmarks include the Mercat Cross, the Edinburgh City Chambers, and the Heart of Midlothian mosaic set into the roadway. Approaching the eastern end of the High Street, points of interest include John Knox House, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and brass road studs marking the former Netherbow Port gateway in the historic Flodden Wall.

Beyond the former city boundary lies the Canongate, a section named after the medieval Augustinian canons of Holyrood Abbey. Independent from Edinburgh until 1856, the Canongate contains Moray House, the Kirk of the Canongate, the Scottish Parliament Building, and the Canongate Tolbooth, which contains The People's Story Museum. The Royal Mile terminates at Abbey Strand, a short approach to Holyrood Palace that features the King's Gallery and the historic remains of a 16th-century palace gatehouse.
