Why Brisbane

Brisbane serves as the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland, home to approximately 2.8 million residents. Positioned in the southeastern corner of the state, the metropolis occupies a hilly floodplain along the Brisbane River, bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Taylor and D'Aguilar mountain ranges to the west. The central business district is built on a peninsula along a prominent bend in the river, situated about 15 kilometres inland from Moreton Bay.

The region has a deep history, having been inhabited for more than 22,000 years by the Yagara, Turrbal, and Quandamooka peoples, who knew the area by Indigenous names such as Meanjin or Magandjin. British settlement began in 1824 with a penal outpost that relocated to North Quay along the river in 1825. After the penal station closed in 1842, free settlers established themselves in the district, and Brisbane was declared the capital when Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859. The city later served as a strategic headquarters for Allied forces during World War II under General Douglas MacArthur.

Visitors to Brisbane encounter a blend of historic architecture and modern urban developments. Landmark heritage structures include Brisbane City Hall, Parliament House, the Treasury Building, and the Story Bridge. The riverfront features contemporary precincts such as Howard Smith Wharves and Queen's Wharf, alongside major artistic and educational facilities within the Queensland Cultural Centre, which houses the Gallery of Modern Art and the State Library of Queensland.

A central point of public recreation is South Bank, featuring sprawling parklands along the riverfront that welcome around 16 million visitors each year. The surrounding natural landscape incorporates sheltered coastal waters in Moreton Bay, protected by barrier sand islands such as Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island. Nearby historic spots include St Helena Island National Park and Teerk Roo Ra, while the wider region contains natural landmarks including the Glass House Mountains and the UNESCO World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests.

Brisbane is a diverse destination, with over 36 percent of its metropolitan population born overseas. The city is supported by a public transport network of rail, bus, and ferry routes, as well as a major international airport and seaport. Having previously hosted global events such as the 1982 Commonwealth Games and World Expo 88, Brisbane continues to expand its international profile as it prepares to host the 2032 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
