Why Guayaquil

Guayaquil, officially Santiago de Guayaquil, is the largest city in Ecuador and the capital of Guayas Province. Located on the western bank of the Guayas River near the Equator, roughly 60 kilometers north of the Gulf of Guayaquil, it serves as the nation's principal port and economic hub. Positioned where the Daule and Babahoyo rivers merge to form the Guayas, the city acts as Ecuador's primary financial, cultural, and commercial center, as well as a key gateway for visitors traveling to the Galápagos Islands.

Definitively established in 1547 as a key shipyard and trading post for the Spanish Empire, Guayaquil developed into a crucial Pacific maritime hub, facilitating trade routes connecting Asia and Latin America. Its colonial era was defined by bustling commerce, shipbuilding, and notable raids by English and French pirates. The city declared its independence from Spain in October 1820 and famously hosted the 1822 summit between liberation leaders Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín.
