Why Garoua
Garoua is a major port city situated along the Benue River, serving as the regional capital of the North Region in Cameroon. Established in the early part of the nineteenth century by Modibbo Adama, the settlement expanded into a key river transit point during the era of steamships. Today, the city is home to roughly 900,000 inhabitants and features a significant Fulbe population. It also hosts a Chadian consulate due to a sizable community of Chadian expatriates living in the area.
Geographically, Garoua acts as the access point for visitors traveling to Benoue National Park. The city contains several distinct districts and neighborhoods, including the Commercial Centre, Lopere, Quartier de Marouare, Poumpoumre, Roumde Adjia, and the northwestern suburb of Yelwa. Religious sites across the city consist primarily of Islamic mosques, alongside various Christian churches representing Catholic, Evangelical, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Assemblies of God congregations.
As the fourth largest port in Cameroon, the city serves as a major commercial center. Goods such as petroleum, cement, hides, peanuts, and cotton are moved on rivercraft operating along the Benue River toward Burutu in Nigeria. Garoua maintains a strong textile sector supported by processing facilities and the cotton enterprise Sodecoton, with fishing and leatherwork providing additional local employment.
For sports fans and event visitors, Garoua features the Roumdé Adjia Stadium, which was utilized as a hosting venue during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. The city experiences a tropical savanna climate characterized by high temperatures throughout the year. The hottest period occurs in March and April prior to the rainy season, while the months of December, January, and February remain completely dry.
Garoua is reachable by air through Garoua International Airport and by land via National Highway 1, situated at the junction connecting the routes between Maroua and Ngaoundéré. Primary thoroughfares in the city include Rue de la Gendarmerie, which runs north past the airport.
