Why Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai, officially known as New Bombay until 1995, is a planned city situated on the mainland of Maharashtra, India. Located along the Konkan coastline directly across the harbour from Salsette Island and Mumbai, the region spans portions of both Thane and Raigad districts. Conceived in the early 1970s to relieve severe overcrowding, housing shortages, and strained public services in neighbouring Mumbai, the urban area has gained national recognition for its municipal cleanliness and air quality.

The history of the region includes the strategic Belapur Fort, constructed in the late sixteenth century by the Siddis of Janjira. Control of the fort subsequently shifted to the Portuguese, then to the Marathas under Chimaji Appa, and eventually to British forces. Formal modern planning began in 1971 under the City and Industrial Development Corporation, which organized the territory into distinct administrative districts known as nodes. These self-contained sectors include Airoli, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane, Vashi, Sanpada, Nerul, and CBD Belapur in the north, as well as southern developments like Ulwe and Dronagiri.

Today, the city functions as a major commercial and educational center, housing numerous corporate headquarters and higher education institutions. Key commercial and residential axes include the Thane-Belapur Road and Palm Beach Road, a six-lane thoroughfare running parallel to the Thane Creek. Along its coastal wetlands and stretches of mangroves, the city provides an important habitat for a significant portion of the region's flamingo population.

Healthcare infrastructure features upgraded civic facilities in Vashi and Airoli alongside private multi-specialty hospitals in Kopar Khairane and Nerul. Local and regional transportation is supported by the Mumbai suburban railway network, municipal bus services, auto rickshaws, and the Navi Mumbai Metro system. Major roadways include the Sion Panvel Highway, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and the 22-kilometer Mumbai Trans Harbour Link freeway bridge that connects the area directly to South Mumbai.

Industrial and long-distance travel relies on substantial maritime and aviation infrastructure. South Navi Mumbai hosts the Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva, a primary container terminal handling a major portion of India's shipping traffic. Air connectivity is provided by the Navi Mumbai International Airport situated near Ulwe, along with access to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
