Why Biên Hòa
Biên Hòa is a travel destination situated in western Đồng Nai Province in southern Vietnam, positioned directly northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Covering 264 square kilometers of midland terrain, the region lies predominantly to the east of the Đồng Nai River. It shares administrative borders with Vĩnh Cửu district to the north, Trảng Bom district to the east, Bình Dương Province to the west, and Long Thành district alongside Ho Chi Minh City to the south. Formally designated as a major urban center and provincial capital before local structural changes, it has grown into a major population center with well over one million residents.
The history of the region includes pivotal events under the Nguyễn dynasty, notably its capture in December 1861 during the Cochinchina Campaign fought between allied European forces and Vietnam. Following the First Indochina War, tens of thousands of refugees from northern and central Vietnam—many of whom were Roman Catholic—resettled here. During the Vietnam War, the strategic local air base saw intensive use. After Vietnam introduced economic reforms known as Đổi Mới in 1986, the area rapidly transformed into an industrial hub, drawing substantial foreign investment to build facilities and industrial zones.
Travelers exploring the destination will find several notable historical sites and cultural landmarks. The Trấn Biên Literature Temple is officially recognized as a national historical relic, while the Ancient Citadel of Biên Hòa represents the only surviving ancient fortress structure in Southern Vietnam. Another sacred location is the Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh Temple, dedicated to the general who contributed significantly to southern territorial expansion. For modern architectural views, the cityscape features high-rise structures such as the Sonadezi Building, Pegasus Plaza, Universe Complex: Dynamic, and The Mira Central Park Hotel. The location also contains the Bình An Cemetery, a national military cemetery.
Leisure and entertainment opportunities are concentrated along the banks of the Đồng Nai River, where visitors find various amusement parks, night venues, and waterfront restaurants. The river features several key crossings, including the Đồng Nai Bridge, Hóa An Bridge, and historical structures like the Rạch Cát Bridge and Ghềnh Bridge, which were originally built by a company associated with Gustave Eiffel. Nearby, the river host facilities such as Đồng Nai Port.
The area is easily accessible by land and rail. Major road corridors crossing the territory include National Route 1 (also known as the Hanoi Highway), National Route 51, and National Route 1K. Rail connections are provided via the Biên Hòa station on the national North–South Railway. For air travel, the city is served by Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport, located 32 kilometers to the south in Ho Chi Minh City.
