Why Ranchi

Ranchi, the capital and most populous district of the Indian state of Jharkhand, is situated in the southern portion of the Chota Nagpur plateau near the Tropic of Cancer. Sitting at an average elevation of 651 meters above sea level, the city is set amidst a hilly topography framed by dense tropical forests. Nicknamed the City of Waterfalls, Ranchi features a relatively moderate, humid subtropical climate compared to the rest of the state. Summer temperatures generally range from 20 to 42 degrees Celsius, while winter temperatures vary between 0 and 25 degrees Celsius, with particularly cold conditions during December and January.

The area surrounding Ranchi has ancient historical roots, with evidence of iron production dating back to around 1400 BCE and ties to historical powers such as the Magadha and Gupta empires. The region was long ruled by the Nagvanshi dynasty, who established historic seats at Chutia in the fourth century and Satranji in the late seventeenth century. In the nineteenth century, British official Captain Thomas Wilkinson established an administrative center at the local village of Kishunpur or Archi, which eventually evolved into Ranchi. The city's name is associated with local tribal vocabulary as well as the rici, or black kite, linked to Pahari Mandir hill. Ranchi later served as a center for local independence movements and functioned as the summer capital of Bihar before becoming the capital of Jharkhand upon its creation in November 2000.

Visitors to Ranchi can explore a range of notable historical and natural sites. The Jagannath Temple, built in 1691 by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, stands as an important historical landmark, alongside the early twentieth-century Ratu Palace. Travelers can also visit Pahari Mandir, a hilltop site located near the historic Bada Talab water reservoir, or head to Tagore Hill, where Jyotirindranath Tagore once resided.

Today, Ranchi serves as a prominent administrative and industrial center in eastern India, hosting major state and national corporations while undergoing modern urban development under the Smart Cities Mission. The city is easily accessible via Birsa Munda Airport, which offers direct flights to major destinations such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. Rail travelers are served by four primary stations, including Ranchi and Hatia, while an extensive national highway network and dedicated bus terminals provide strong road connections across the region.
