Why Gwalior
Located in northern Madhya Pradesh, approximately 300 kilometers from Delhi, Gwalior is a major historic city situated in a valley within the Ganga-Yamuna Drainage Basin. Resting at an average elevation of 197 meters and surrounded by high rocky hills, the city comprises several distinct areas, including Lashkar, the Old City near the fort, and Morar Cantonment. Designated as a UNESCO City of Music, Gwalior is renowned for its rich artistic lineage, serving as the cradle of the subcontinent's oldest musical tradition.
The city derives its name from Gwalior Fort, historically known as Gopgiri or Gopachal. According to historical accounts and local lore, a chieftain named Suraj Sen established the city and fortress after being cured of leprosy by the hermit Gwalipa. Over time, the territory was governed by diverse dynasties, including the Alchon Huns, Gurjara-Pratihara, Kachchhapaghata, and the Delhi Sultanate. Under the rule of the Tomar dynasty, Gwalior entered a golden era that saw the development of its celebrated singing school and the construction of the grand Man Mandir Palace.
Control later shifted through Mughal, Jat, and Scindia Maratha governance, leading to its status as a princely state under the British Raj. The city was a pivotal center during the 1857 rebellion, where freedom fighter Rani Lakshmibai engaged in battle and died; her memory is preserved by a statue and cenotaph in the Phoolbagh area. After Indian independence, Gwalior initially served as the capital of Madhya Bharat before its inclusion in Madhya Pradesh.
Architectural and cultural sights are concentrated around the fort plateau and the lower city. Notable structures include the Teli ka Mandir, the Sas and Bahu Temples, and the Chaturbhuj Temple, which features the world's oldest written record of the numeral zero. Visitors to the fort can attend evening light and sound shows illustrating its history. Elsewhere in the city, recreational grounds include Phool Bagh, the Italian Garden with its musical fountains, and the Gwalior Zoo, which shelters wildlife such as white tigers, hyenas, and bison.
Water-based leisure is available at the nearby Tigra Dam reservoir, which offers paddle boating, speed boating, and water scooters, as well as along the Swarna Rekha river. Gwalior experiences a subtropical climate with exceptionally hot summers lasting from late March into July, a monsoon season spanning late June to early October with peak rainfall in August, and mild, clear winters between November and February.
