Why São Gonçalo

São Gonçalo is a major municipality situated within the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil. Located along the shores of Guanabara Bay across from the state capital, it shares land borders with the neighboring municipalities of Niterói, Maricá, and Itaboraí. The local terrain consists of crystalline formations, including coastal hills and prominent massifs. Nature conservation efforts are present within its limits, which contain four percent of the Guanabara Ecological Station and a section of the Central Rio de Janeiro Atlantic Forest Mosaic.

Indigenous peoples, including the Tapuia and later the Tupinambás, originally inhabited the area, with archaeological evidence pointing to native settlements on Itaóca Island. European colonization began in earnest during the late 16th century when Gonçalo Gonçalves was granted land along the Imboaçu River in 1579, where he erected a chapel to São Gonçalo de Amarante. Early colonial history saw the area involved in the 17th-century Cachaça Revolt against tax levies. By the 19th century, the region prospered through sugarcane production and maritime transport across roughly a dozen coastal ports. Rapid industrial growth in the mid-20th century subsequently earned the municipality the industrial moniker "Manchester Fluminense."

Travelers interested in historical architecture can view preserved colonial sites across the region. A primary landmark is the Colubandê farm, established by Jesuit priests in the early 17th century near the modern RJ-104 highway. Additional heritage sites include the Nossa Senhora da Boa Esperança Farm in Ipiiba, the Fazenda da Luz in Itaóca, the Chapel of São João in Porto do Gradim, and historic estate structures in Engenho Pequeno.

The climate in São Gonçalo ranges from tropical to subtropical, featuring rainy summers and relatively dry winter seasons. Summer conditions are warm and humid, averaging 28 °C with occasional high temperatures reaching between 38 °C and 40 °C. Winter days offer sunnier skies and milder temperatures, averaging 21 °C during the day, though influxes of the Atlantic Polar Mass can occasionally drop early morning temperatures to around 10 °C. Administratively divided into five main districts—São Gonçalo, Ipiíba, Monjolo, Neves, and Sete Pontes—the city sits in close proximity to major urban centers and key regional transit routes.
