Why Tabuk
Tabuk is a prominent city situated in the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia, where it serves as the provincial capital near the Saudi Arabia–Jordan border. Historically recognized as a vital gateway to Northern Arabia, the surrounding area corresponds roughly to the ancient territory of Midian and has long been a crossroads for regional travel and historical movements.
The region around Tabuk possesses a deep prehistoric and archaeological legacy. West of the city and within places like Wadi Dam, numerous locations display rock art and inscriptions spanning from the Paleolithic to the Islamic era. These petroglyphs illustrate various human and animal figures, alongside written records in Thamudic, Greek, and Nabataean scripts. Classical records by the 2nd-century Alexandrine geographer Ptolemy reference a site called Tabawa, while early Arab poets such as Antra and Nabiqa cited local features like Mount Hasmi in their verse.
Tabuk gained historic significance in 630 during the Expedition of Tabuk led by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. During this journey, Muhammad camped for over ten days beside Ain Sukkrah, an ancient spring dating back to pre-Islamic times, and drank from its waters. In later centuries, the area developed along major Syrian and Egyptian Hajj pilgrimage routes, as well as the path of the Hejaz railway, which retains an important historic station in the city.
Among the notable architectural sights open to visitors is the Tabuk Hajj Fort. Originating in the 16th century during the Ottoman era, this restored two-story structure was constructed around a central courtyard to safeguard passing pilgrims. The fort houses a mosque, a well, and stairways leading to guard watchtowers. Other historical milestones in the town include a visit by explorer Charles Montagu Doughty in 1877, capture by Arab forces in 1918, and its role as a military focus during the 1991 Gulf War.
In modern times, Tabuk functions as a major educational center for the province. The University of Tabuk, founded in 2006, offers diverse degree programs alongside private institutions like Fahd bin Sultan University, a branch of the Saudi Electronic University, and vocational colleges overseen by the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation.
Travelers reaching Tabuk generally arrive via Prince Sultan International Airport. This primary air hub handles both domestic flights—connecting the city to major Saudi centers such as Riyadh and Jeddah—and direct international routes.
