Why Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is the second largest of Spain's Canary Islands, situated in the Atlantic Ocean roughly 97 kilometers off the coast of North Africa. As the geologically oldest island in the archipelago, its origins date back approximately 20 million years. Recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, the island features an elongated landscape measuring 100 kilometers long and 31 kilometers wide, with its administrative center located at Puerto del Rosario.
The island's geography is split into two primary regions: Maxorata in the north and the Jandía peninsula in the south, connected by the narrow Istmo de la Pared. High elevations are concentrated in the southwest, where Pico de la Zarza rises to 807 meters within the Jandía Massif. Protected natural spaces cover a substantial portion of Fuerteventura, encompassing volcanic lava fields such as Malpaís Grande and Chico, Tindaya Mountain, and coastal salt flats. Along its seaboard lie 152 individual beaches, featuring long stretches of white sand alongside dark volcanic shingle.
Prior to European settlement, the island was inhabited by indigenous Guanches who resided in caves and semi-subterranean dwellings. European conquest began in 1402 under French knights Jean de Béthencourt and Gadifer de la Salle, who established Betancuria as the original inland capital. Following centuries of coastal raids by privateers and Berber expeditions, military rule was eventually dissolved and the capital was transferred to the coastal port of Puerto del Rosario in 1859. Modern tourism began expanding during the mid-1960s, supported by the establishment of hotel accommodations and the opening of Fuerteventura Airport.
Fuerteventura experiences a hot desert climate characterized by frequent winds and warm year-round conditions, with temperatures usually remaining between 18 °C and 32 °C. Annual precipitation is low, averaging roughly 147 millimeters and occurring mostly in autumn and winter. Occasional dust events known as Calima can transport fine particles from the Sahara Desert across the water, temporarily elevating temperatures and reducing visibility. The island is accessible via its airport near Puerto del Rosario and serves as a major destination for sunseekers and watersports enthusiasts.
