A rainy day in Barcelona is the perfect excuse to step inside Gaudí’s masterpieces and the city’s covered halls. When the Mediterranean sky turns grey, these indoor sights are where Barcelona is at its most dazzling.
Make straight for Sagrada Família: on a dull day the crowds thin a little, and the basilica’s interior — a forest of soaring columns lit by kaleidoscopic stained glass — is jaw-dropping in any weather. Book a timed slot. Then continue the Gaudí trail indoors at Casa Batlló, whose immersive, light-filled visit is one of the most enjoyable things to do in the city, rain or shine, and its calmer cousin Casa Milà (La Pedrera), with its dreamlike attic and wave-shaped rooftop under cover.
For a warm, atmospheric refuge, dive into the La Boqueria Market: a bustling covered hall where you can graze on tapas, fresh juice and seafood while the rain drums on the roof outside. It is one of the most enjoyable dry hours in Barcelona, and completely free to wander.
Between the big interiors, the city gives you more shelter than most: the Gothic Quarter’s narrow lanes stay half-dry under their overhangs, and its churches and small museums are made for a wet afternoon. A rainy day is also the calmest time to visit the Gaudí houses, when the queues that stretch down the block in summer all but disappear. Each guide below has opening hours, ticket details and how to reserve, so you can plan a dry, unhurried route from one to the next.
One planning note: even on a wet day the Gaudí houses and Sagrada Família sell timed tickets that go fast, so book online before you head out rather than queuing in the rain. The metro keeps you largely underground between stops, the Gothic Quarter’s narrow lanes offer natural shelter, and the covered La Boqueria is a warm, atmospheric place to wait out the heaviest showers over a plate of tapas. Save the beach and the Montjuïc hilltop for when the sun returns.
